Transformer Faults
The transformer is an important part of many traditional caravan power supply and battery charging units. Transformer-related faults can result in no output, reduced voltage, excessive heat, unusual humming or complete failure of the power unit.
Before assuming that the transformer itself has failed, we inspect the surrounding circuitry because rectifiers, connections, thermal protection devices or excessive load on the secondary circuit can produce similar symptoms.
The transformer and associated circuitry are tested to determine the actual cause of the fault before repair work is carried out.
No Charging Output
A caravan power unit that has mains power but produces no useful charging output may have a fault in the transformer, rectifier, fuse, wiring, output stage or associated electronic circuitry.
We test the relevant sections of the power supply to identify the failed component rather than replacing parts unnecessarily.
Low or Unstable Output Voltage
A power supply may appear to work but produce insufficient voltage to charge the leisure battery correctly. In some cases the voltage may measure normally without a load but fall when the battery or caravan electrical system is connected.
Possible causes can include deteriorated capacitors, rectifier problems, poor electrical connections, damaged solder joints, overheating components or faults elsewhere in the power supply.
Rectifier and Diode Repairs
Rectifier components convert the transformer's AC output into the DC supply required by the caravan electrical system and leisure battery.
Failed rectifier diodes or bridge rectifiers can cause low output, excessive ripple, blown fuses, overheating or complete loss of charging voltage.
Where suitable replacement components are available, failed rectifier components can be replaced and the power unit tested before being returned to service.
Blown Fuse and Short Circuit Faults
A fuse that repeatedly blows usually indicates an underlying electrical fault. Possible causes include shorted rectifiers, damaged power components, wiring faults or problems within the transformer or associated circuitry.
Repeatedly replacing the fuse without locating the cause can result in further damage. A unit that continues to blow fuses should be inspected before further power is applied.
Overheating and Burnt Components
Caravan power units can operate for long periods and may experience significant heat, particularly when supplying electrical equipment while charging the leisure battery.
Ageing components, poor connections and excessive electrical resistance can lead to discoloured circuit boards, burnt connectors, damaged resistors or other heat-related failures.
Where repair is practical, damaged components and affected circuit board areas are repaired before electrical testing is carried out.
